About

Joseph Carroll got his Ph. D. in Comparative Literature at Berkeley in 1981.  He has published books on Matthew Arnold and Wallace Stevens and has produced an edition of Darwin's On the Origin of Species (Broadview, 2003).  Since the early 1990s, he has been occupied with integrating literary studies with evolutionary social science.  He is the author of Evolution and Literary Theory (1995) and Literary Darwinism: Evolution, Human Nature, and Literature (2004). A new collection of essays is forthcoming from SUNY Press: Reading Human Nature: Literary Darwinism in Theory and Practice.  In company with Brian Boyd and Jonathan Gottschall, Carroll edited the anthology: Evolution, Literature, and Film: A Reader. In company with Alice Andrews, he is co-editing a new annual journal: The Evolutionary Review: Art, Science, Culture.  He is guest-editor for a special evolutionary issue of the online journal Politics and Culture (2010, issue 1).  In company with Jonanthan Gottschall, John Johnson, and Dan Kruger, he has produced a book ms., now under submission: Graphing Jane Austen: Paleolithic Politics in British Novels of the Nineteenth Century.  In the journal Style (vol. 42, nos. 2 & 3, Summer/Fall 2008, pp. 1-411), he wrote a target article on "An Evolutionary Paradigm for Literary Study."  35 scholars wrote responses, and Carroll wrote a rejoinder.
